Harana Surf recognizes the threat of climate change to their island home and its community. On a combination of grid power and diesel generator backup along with staff taking motorcycles to work, there are greenhouse gas emissions that the resort is still trying to minimize while they search for an economical renewable energy solution for their remote location. In the meantime, Harana tracks their emissions with the STOKE carbon footprint calculator and offset their 2018 footprint with a REDD+ peat swamp forest project in Indonesia—Katingan Mentaya—that protects the land against the threat of conversion to an acacia plantation. The VCS and Triple Gold Certified project in Borneo also benefits 34 communities and 45,000 people to continue to use the land in a way that does not threaten their precious resources and carbon sinks.
